The website to be named artsandhumanities.net is under development. It will draw extensively from Martha Nussbaum’s book, Not for Profit: Why Democracy Needs the Humanities. Nussbaum is Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago and the author, co-author or editor of 36 books.
The new website will draw upon Not For Profit for arguments why education in the arts and humanities is essential for the functioning of democracy. It will aim to attract contributors who are
- Indians living in India
- Indians living in the United States, or
- non-Indian U.S. citizens
in hopes of inducing conversations between them.
Martha Nussbaum became acquainted with and worked closely with the Indian Nobel Prize-winning development economist Amartya Sen. They founded the Human Development and Capability Association and were coeditors of The Quality of Life (WIDER Studies in Development Economics).
Nussbaum later met and became close friends with Amartya Sen’s mother who introduced her to friends and acquaintances in India. This enabled Nussbaum to write Women and Human Development: the Capabilities Approach which gives close scrutiny to the plights of women living in India.
News about the coming website will be posted on the DOING THE MOST GOOD: aid and guidance website under the word ARCHIVES.
Volunteers to contribute to the development of the new website are urgently needed, especially writers. You are invited to comment to this post, giving your name, email address and any other contact information. Also tell us about your skills, interests and experience. Thank you!
